Supporting local businesses'

Although I’ve professed a liking for Wetherspoons I do try to spread the joy around by using local business/café’s etc. not trying to be self-righteous and get that sometimes independents can be pricier but I think as we come out of Covid we all ought to be doing our best to use local retailers/suppliers/eateries – not knocking chains and they employ a lot of people (and some independents are not as perfect as they make out) but whether butcher, baker or proverbial candlestick maker – next time you need something stop and think if there is a local independent you can get that from even in the retail desert that is Newport there are some hidden gems – wider area there are even more places – tbh for [say] books I email orders to a bookshop down the road, etc yes sometimes it cost a bit more but you do get a smug feeling knowing you’re helping to keep high streets alive and that good people are getting the money rather than faceless shareholders…

I wouldn't spend a penny of my hard earned cash in Wetherspoons. I would rather pay more for a pint elsewhere.
I agree though, I try and buy local.

each to their own - tbf they do employ lots of people, offer degrees, employ people with learning disabilities and offer warm & dry place to gather and eat/drink cheap and cheerful products they also do community stuff as well – I get their owner has been [often tongue in cheek I reckon] controversial but no big business owner is a saint - great for a breakfast and clean toilets - you know what you’re going to get in pretty much any town and I think local pubs have had to up their game to compete (I’m old enough to remember the unwelcoming pub with warm orange juice and service with a scowl) - the McDonalds of the pub world? Not my favourite place by any means but its does what it says on the tin – I don’t drink that much so as far as a ‘pint’ goes tend to drink with a meal and would ‘eat out’ in other places usually independents if I can (message me for a few recommends if you want)…I certainly don’t put it up there in my top 10 but for a cheap quick brekky & coffee as well as chance to ‘powder my nose’ in a clean toilet (I’m not obsessed with toilets but it does help to know they are clean and tbh I’ve slipped into a spoons a few times in strange places when on business or before a job interview or meeting someone new – sometimes just to check my tie not even to use the bogs!) in a strange town while killing some time – come to think of it might pop in for Saturday breakfast tomorrow!

I'm afraid it's down to price with me if I fancy a cuppa when I'm in town 99p in spoons and drink as much as you want surprised you don't see more people "working from home " there use their fuel costs in winter for 99p .

Then you got the local shop that rips you off I'll go without milk and bread etc and go to aldi next day

You would rather your money go to a German company?

Aldi

Aldi (stylized as ALDI) is the common brand of two German family-owned discount supermarket chains with over 10,000 stores in 20 countries and an estimated combined turnover of more than €50 billion. The chain was founded by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht in 1946 when they took over their mother's store in Essen. The business was split into two separate groups in 1960, that later became Aldi Nord, headquartered in Essen, and Aldi Süd, headquartered in Mülheim.
