I'm unsure of the exact ruling of that . I thought off any part of the leg is deemed back pass?
"deliberately kicked to the goalkeeper by a team-mate"

I would jave thought a kick is with your foot ?
You can certainly control and direct a ball with you thigh, calf.Any pass back deliberately via a leg or foot should had resulted with a free kick from where the keeper picked it up
I thought the ref was far from perfect, his biggest mistake was not playing advantage after Pipes foul, he also failed to take action against Colchester continually taking quickj throw ins 5 yards further forward than when they went out

The laws of the game clearly state backpasses have to be made with the foot, as you don't kick with a leg. "It has been deliberately kicked to the goalkeeper by a team-mate".

You have always been able to thigh the ball back. What you can't do is artificially contrive a backpass (eg chipping the ball onto your own head to head back, or kneeling down to thigh back a ball on the ground).

East is a decent ref even at Prem level, not surprised he did well yesterday.
