MK captain Lewington was sent off for a confrontation (foul and abusive language) with referee Sam Purkiss re his decision to not award a goal.

As his team's captain he can raise issues with the referee but he shouldn't be using foul and abusive language. So my sympathy is strictly limited.

Impossible to tell from that image, but if the ball is touching the goal post then as the goal line and posts have the same dimensions the ball has not completely crossed the goal line and so would not be a goal. Unlikely, but not impossible. But you'd have to manipulate the ball very carefully, maintaining contact with the post while getting it to a "safer" position.

... but given it's Wrexham, it was definitely a goal!

I suspect in the circumstances, he may have used the "cheat" word that will always see a red card issued.

A bad decision by the ref (disallowing the goal), but we all feel aggrieved at some time. With the aid of TV, that one was quite awful.
