Morecambe (a) match thread
Fri Aug 30, 2024 11:43 am
Don't usually start match threads on here, but doing this one as our weekly #4QuestionPreview has gone up. Rather than the usual text-based answers, we took advantage of the fact that we contributed to a Morecambe FC podcast to throw questions at them during that chat. Tried to keep it to a short, easily-digestable one-minute(ish) clip...
What do we think, prediction-wise? Obviously Morecambe have had a terrible start, but for me the starting point needs to be don't lose it. If we came away with a point, that'd be very solid. If we got a clean sheet, even better. And only then would I start to get greedy about maybe nicking a win, especially if we don't have a fit James Clarke.
Thoughts?

Okay lets just assume Clarke is out, which seems the most sensible starting point, because a long journey to Morecambe isn't going to help any injury. So does Jardim stick with 5 at the back, in which case whom plays in the centre of the three CB's? Either Baker or Brennan are capable of playing there (both can play defensive midfielder) so it becomes a case of which CB Jardim prefers either on the right or left. Or he could go back to a back four and play one of the several new midfielders brought to the club in just over a week. The sensible thing would seem to be go for the five and protect the point gained by not conceding. I don't see Jardim doing that - his remit is to try and play passing football and my guess is a back 4 and one of the many midfielders acquired in the last week coming into midfield. Keiron Evans seems the obvious choice as he's had time to acclimatise to the squad and ways to play, whereas Miley and Mawene have barely had time to get to know the names of their squad mates.
A more exciting option would be to pick Greaves and be more attacking. In reality that would mean lining up as a possible 4-2-1-3 with Antwi and Morris as the defensive midfielders and Wildig behind the wingers/striker. It would involve McLoughlin and Glennon having their defensive heads on and Baker and Brennan cutting out lapses of concentration. I think it would be bold and I don't think Morecambe will expect it...

Clarke replaced by Whitmore. That's the only change to starting 11.

Townsend made one of the best saves I have ever seen to keep it 1 nil tto County. But Morecombe now on top and County need to improve jn second half.

We remain weak at left back, surprised it was a position not on Nelson’s shopping list.

I think Glennon is an improvement on others we've had in previous years. But I wouldn't mind seeing Sanca picked there on Tuesday to see if that is an option.

0-1 win with a Wildig goal. It doesn’t get much better than that!
Agree on Sanca. Better to blood him now in a controlled manner than when injuries force our hand.

Podcast about today's game already up - it's an Ian Street match diary special. Enjoy!
