Grandstand - Exiles v Newcastle

1
Wednesday 30th September.
Newport County v Newcastle Utd.

The clubs have met only three times previous in competitive matches.

1921 / 1922:
FA Cup R1.
Newcastle Utd 6-0 Newport County.

1946 / 1947:

Second Division.
To date, this is the only season that County have competed a league season higher than the third tier.

Newcastle Utd 13-0 Newport County.
This scoreline is currently a joint all time record margin of victory for an English Football League match. Len Shackleton scored six in what was his debut appearance for the Geordies.

Newport County 4-2 Newcastle Utd:
Sweet revenge for County in what was their penultimate game of the season. Two goals from Eddie Carr and one each from Frank Rawcliffe and Harry Haddon for County
County finished bottom in 22nd place while Newcastle missed out on promotion, finishing in fifth position, ten points adrift of second place.

As for this weeks Carabao Cup R4 match, i can foresee Newcastle fielding a side virtually consisting  regular first choice players because on the evening before, Tuesday, Newcastle U21's play an EFL Trophy match at Crewe.
Let's hope for a cup upset ''based on the difference between both clubs'' similar to the 1971 / 1972 FA Cup Third Round replay between Hereford Utd and Newcastle Utd at Edgar Street. Hereford were of the South League, the fifth tier, while Newcastle were of the First Division, tier one. The match was played on an awful pitch, similar to how Rodney Parade had been at times over the years and Hereford won 2-1 in extra time with a goal from sub Ricky George. Colin Addison was player manager for the Bulls, later to be County manager.

Managers:

Newport County - Mike Flynn
Newcastle Utd - Steve Bruce.

Head to head:

Not surprisingly, both managers have not met previously as opposing managers.

Some players who've had connections with both Newport County and Newcastle Utd.

Kyle Cameron
Karl Darlow
Darren Peacock
Bobby Ferguson
Tommy Lowes
Dave Elliott
Terry Melling
Ollie Burton
Ben Tozer

I think if we run at them, get in their face (they don't like it up 'em) and shoot on sight we may have a good chance of being quarter finalists.
Let's hope so. Shame it's not a night game. Our floodlights are a great advantage after dark.

A Now TV 24 hour Sky Sports pass can be bought anytime. You do not have to wait until Wednesday. When you buy the pass it is credited to your Now account. It only starts to run (or is activated as they put it) when you try to watch Sky Sports. So you can watch a game on Tuesday night from say 8 pm and still have enough time left to watch County on Wednesday.

It could be a question on Pointless:
"Name a country where Newport v Newcastle can be watched live."
"Guinea-Bissau."
"Pointless answer."

Interesting thing in another report on that site: With the virus situation, last month FIFA gave clubs the power to block international call-ups if they have quarantine fears.
