If La Liga are going to the states, how long before the PL also think that this is too good to miss out on ?

I suppose that the NFL play some of their matches in the UK, so is it just expanding the game ?

Got a fair amount of backlash from the media and fans when they suggested that 39th game idea a few years ago that they backed down. Hopefully they steer well clear, top flight football will have sold what little of it's soul it has left if anything like this goes ahead. Next step, European Super League.

Never really understood the concept of a 39th game. Surely it would just be a glorified friendly with no points at stake? The yanks would get all excited as usual about 'English soccer' and they could play a non contact version for 90 meaningless minutes - plus perhaps extra time, for an agreed fee, if it was a drawn game. Thus most matches would be drawn. All in all, a daft idea. They'd love it.

No the 39th game was going to be an extra league game

But that upsets the balance of every team playing everyone else twice. Somebody gets the unfair advantage of playing the bottom club three times.

How would the 39th game idea work? Who would play whom?

Won't happen because there was such a massive stink about it last time (which was about 8 years ago). Scudamore leaving as Premier League Chief Exec means some changes will be in the offing, but not convinced this will be one of them.

As for European Super League, pretty much every major club wants domestic income and none of the English clubs are going to write off the massive sums they get from the Prem tv deals so it's a non-starter for them, Barcelona and Real Madrid also get a huge cut of LaLiga money compared to the others too, so they won't want to be dependent on a competition that the Champions League shows is nothing like as profitable.

I think that the Sky/BT and every other input of money that currently goes to Premiership Football would follow any Super League

FIFA are already talking with a company about a £25b World Club Cup tournament. I wouldn't rule out talks of a Super League within the next 10 years. The top 6 in the PL have previously made suggestions they want more of a cut on the TV money based similarly to how La Liga distributes theirs.

There's no interest in that stuff though, and FIFA know it - they're desperately trying to battle to keep international football relevant as everyone else has domestic funding streams and they don't get the kind of share they want.

The top 6 can bog off to their own competition if they like, no-one else will care and we'll all have a fine time in a competitive tournament without them. Win-win. They've already fixed the rules so no-one else is allowed to spend as much on their team as the teams who had the most money when FFP came in, it's ridiculous.
